I am indebted for all the information in this post to Dr. Ted Drange who, in turn, credits it all to David Swanson, author of the upcoming book “Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union”.
2.3% of all Americans say there is no such thing as a God.
5.7% say they are not sure. That makes them agnostics.
12.11% say “there is a higher power but no personal God.
About 80% seem to be full-fledged believers without reservation but 15% have no religious affiliation. The president of the U.S. claims to be a man of deep faith and has a church affiliation but both his parents were atheists and that casts some suspicion on him because he is a man who knows the history of the country and knows that you cannot be elected unless you declare yourself a true believer. 75% of secularists who voted said they voted for Obama.
A 2003 survey asked Americans what group they would not want their child to marry a member of. Twenty-seven percent said African-American, 34 percent said Muslim, and 48 percent said atheist.
Not gays, not Blacks, not Muslims, but atheists remain the outcasts of society.
