Despite the fact that the liberal press is condemning Arizona for its new, anti-immigrant law, most Americans are happy with it. The PEW Research Center reports these depressing findings.
Fully 73% of Americans say they approve of requiring people to produce documents verifying their legal status if police ask for them. Two-thirds (67%) approve of allowing police to detain anyone who cannot verify their legal status, while 62% approve of allowing police to question people they think may be in the country illegally. While, as one might expect, Republicans are strongly in favor of Arizona’s crackdown, surprisingly so are most Democrats.
Favor requiring people to produce documents – Republicans 86%. Democrats 65%. Independents 73%
Favor allowing police to detain anyone who can’t verify legal status – R 81%. D 55%. Indep 69%
Favor allowing police to question anyone they want. R 79%. D 50%. Indep 64%.
